Tibetan culture and Buddhism are deeply intertwined and have been so for over a thousand years. Tibetan art echoes this interconnectedness and the deep mysticism of the Himalayan plateau. Never underestimate the power of great art and the Tibetan culture to captivate. Those who have read "The Way of the White Cloud" by the German-born Lama Anagarika Govinda have insight into the power of Tibetan art to influence the lives of Westerners. Buffalo artist and Director of the Buffalo Arts Studio, Joanna Angie, came under this same spell while traveling in Tibet. Her private studio now vibrates with the rich colors and mystical themes of this extraordinary culture. As Joanna puts it: "I try to integrate facets of modern western culture with traditional Tibetan themes". These modern elements are subtly present in many of her works. Three paintings in this collection: "Wind Horse" , "The Medicine Buddha" and "Green Tara" are shown to the left. Unfortunately, these tiny images cannot convey the full power and beauty of four-by-five foot high paintings. The collection has a number of large, thangka-style paintings that need to be experienced. |
